LEGO 40889 Build, Paint and Play! – A Creative New Gift With Purchase Arriving in Singapore
LEGO is celebrating the creativity of model building with its latest Gift With Purchase (GWP), LEGO Ideas 40889 Build, Paint and Play! Launching on 28 October 2026, this charming 158-piece set pays tribute to the world of miniature modelling, painting and customisation.
A LEGO Set That Celebrates Model Building
Unlike traditional LEGO sets featuring vehicles, buildings or characters, Build, Paint and Play! recreates a miniature model-making workstation entirely out of LEGO bricks.
The colourful display features a green cutting mat, a model kit sprue, paint tubes, a brush, glue and a cutting tool. At the centre of the scene is a teal Classic Space astronaut, representing the finished model.
The concept originated from LEGO fan designer Doomslizer, whose creation won the LEGO Ideas “Build Your Hobby” challenge in 2025. LEGO subsequently transformed the winning submission into an official promotional set.
One particularly clever detail is found on the paint tubes. Their numbers — 107, 26 and 24 — correspond to LEGO’s internal colour codes for teal, black and yellow, respectively. It’s a subtle Easter egg that adds authenticity to the miniature workshop.
A Special Surprise for Classic Space Collectors
Beyond its creative design, LEGO 40889 contains something particularly exciting for collectors of the original LEGO Classic Space theme.
The set introduces a modern Light Bluish Gray Classic Space helmet and air tanks, two elements that collectors have been waiting years to see in matching colours.
These pieces can be combined with the torso from the LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 17 Rocket Boy to assemble a more colour-consistent gray Classic Space astronaut.
Although the promotional set itself features a teal astronaut rather than the blue astronaut from the original fan submission, the newly recoloured accessories make this release especially appealing to longtime LEGO Space fans.
Is LEGO 40889 Worth Collecting?
What makes Build, Paint and Play! interesting is its unusual concept. Rather than being simply another small promotional model, it celebrates the hobby of model building itself.
Its appeal extends beyond traditional LEGO collectors to enthusiasts who enjoy Gundam model kits, miniature painting and scale modelling.
The inclusion of newly recoloured Classic Space accessories also gives the set an additional attraction for collectors who have been assembling astronauts in different colours.
The promotion is scheduled to begin on 28 October 2026. LEGO has not confirmed an official end date, so collectors interested in securing the set should avoid waiting too long.
With a Singapore qualifying threshold of S$190, LEGO 40889 may be a worthwhile bonus for shoppers already planning to purchase larger LEGO sets. However, spending unnecessarily just to qualify for a promotional item may not represent the best value.
