My Own Creation (MOC): Pedra Branca

Building Pedra Branca in LEGO

Sometimes a LEGO MOC is more than just an impressive build — it can also tell a story about a place, its history and the people connected to it. Gerald Cacas’ LEGO recreation of Pedra Branca is a great example.

Commissioned by a group of Singapore Navy servicemen, the model was designed together with the clients, with the goal of capturing Pedra Branca while working within a fixed budget. Gerald chose to keep the model close to LEGO Architecture scale, resulting in a compact build of approximately 300–350 pieces, including the base plates and hidden supporting structures.

Small Scale, Clever Techniques

Despite its relatively small size, the model captures many of the distinctive features of Pedra Branca. Gerald uses familiar SNOT (Studs Not On Top) techniques alongside more unconventional connections to achieve the shapes and proportions of the structures.

One particularly interesting detail is the antenna tower, which transitions from a 3×3 plate at its base to a 2×2 plate at the top. Gerald also used a tyre element around the lighthouse to create a subtle detail that adds extra character to the build.

Exploring a New Theme

For Gerald, the project was also an opportunity to step outside his usual car-themed MOCs and explore architectural modelling. The experience provided valuable lessons in parts procurement, working within a budget and balancing detail with piece count — all important considerations when creating a commissioned LEGO model.

The first model was intended as a gift for the group’s boss, who was serving in the Navy. The clients were evidently happy with the result, as they subsequently commissioned three more models depicting different periods, bringing the project to a total of four builds.

What began as a relatively small commission ultimately became an interesting design challenge — demonstrating how a few hundred LEGO pieces, combined with clever techniques and thoughtful detailing, can capture an important piece of Singapore’s maritime heritage.

For fans of LEGO MOCs, Gerald’s Pedra Branca build is a great reminder that scale doesn’t have to limit creativity.
