LEGO Unveils Its 2027 Lunar New Year Collection – A Prosperous Start to the Year of the Goat!
The LEGO Group is ushering in the Lunar New Year of 2027 with three exciting new releases celebrating Chinese culture, traditional symbolism and the spirit of togetherness.
Officially unveiled at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, the collection features two elaborate Spring Festival sets alongside a charming gift-with-purchase (GWP).
Leading the celebrations are LEGO 80122 Auspicious Pixiu Under Fortune Tree and LEGO 80123 Spring Festival Voyage, accompanied by LEGO 40976 Prosperity Lion.
From a mythical creature believed to safeguard wealth to an ornate ship carrying wishes for a prosperous journey, this year’s collection takes a slightly different approach to traditional Lunar New Year decorations.
All three sets are scheduled to launch on 1 January 2027, ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations on 6 February, when the Year of the Fire Goat begins.
LEGO 80122 – Auspicious Pixiu Under Fortune Tree
Perhaps the most intriguing of the three releases is LEGO 80122, which introduces a creature rarely seen in official LEGO sets: the mythical Pixiu.
This colourful display features a poseable Pixiu positioned beside an elaborate Fortune Tree decorated with golden coins, combining two traditional symbols associated with prosperity and good fortune.
The model isn’t purely decorative. Builders can remove coins from the tree and feed them to the Pixiu, where they are stored inside the creature’s belly. The coins can subsequently be retrieved and returned to the tree.
It’s a delightful interactive feature that connects the building experience directly to the mythology behind the creature.
What exactly is a Pixiu?
In Chinese mythology, the Pixiu (貔貅) is a legendary creature commonly associated with attracting wealth and protecting its owner from misfortune.
Often depicted with dragon-like features, a powerful body and an imposing expression, the Pixiu occupies a special place in Chinese folklore and traditional decorative art.
One of the most popular legends describes the Pixiu as a creature with an insatiable appetite for gold, silver and precious treasures.
However, the creature is traditionally said to have no means of expelling what it consumes. As a result, it became a symbol of accumulating and retaining wealth.
This explains why Pixiu figurines are frequently displayed in homes, offices and businesses, particularly by those who believe in feng shui traditions.
LEGO has cleverly incorporated this legend into set 80122 through its coin-feeding mechanism.
Rather than simply recreating a traditional ornament, the designers have turned an ancient cultural belief into an entertaining mechanical feature.
For collectors interested in Chinese mythology, this could be one of the more distinctive LEGO Lunar New Year releases in recent years.
LEGO 80123 – Spring Festival Voyage
The larger of the two main releases, LEGO 80123 Spring Festival Voyage, takes the Lunar New Year celebrations onto the water with an elaborate Chinese-inspired sailing vessel.
Rather than recreating a traditional family reunion inside a home, LEGO has imagined a family celebrating the occasion aboard a beautifully decorated ship.
The vessel features a large sail bearing a Chinese inscription expressing the wish for smooth sailing, a phrase associated with success, good fortune and an unhindered journey through life.
The set contains seven minifigures, which can be arranged around a dining table on the ship’s deck to enjoy a festive reunion meal.
There’s plenty to discover beneath the decorative exterior. The roof can be removed to reveal a kitchen, while another compartment contains coins and traditional red packets.
One particularly delightful addition is a minifigure wearing a new goat mask headpiece, acknowledging the arrival of the Year of the Goat in 2027.
The Meaning Behind the Voyage
In Chinese culture, Lunar New Year is closely associated with fresh beginnings, family reunions and hopes for a successful year ahead.
The expression 一帆风顺 (yī fān fēng shùn), literally referring to a favourable wind carrying a sail, is a popular blessing wishing someone a smooth and successful journey.
It is commonly used when wishing friends or family members success in their careers, studies, travels or new ventures.
The ship therefore represents more than a means of transportation. It becomes a symbol of moving confidently into the new year, carrying the hopes and blessings of an entire family.
This makes LEGO 80123 especially meaningful as a festive display, combining an attractive sailing vessel with a traditional Chinese blessing.
A Subtle Tribute to the Year of the Fire Goat
The goat is the eighth animal in the Chinese zodiac, following the horse and preceding the monkey.
According to the traditional zodiac cycle, people born in the Year of the Goat are often associated with gentleness, creativity and compassion.
The year 2027 is specifically the Year of the Fire Goat, a combination that occurs once every 60 years.
While LEGO 80123 doesn’t centre its entire design around the zodiac animal, the inclusion of the goat-mask minifigure provides a playful reference to the coming year.
For collectors who enjoy LEGO’s Chinese Traditional Festival sets, this is a charming detail that connects the model to the wider annual collection.
LEGO 40976 – Prosperity Lion (Gift With Purchase)
Completing the collection is LEGO 40976 Prosperity Lion, a colourful brick-built interpretation of the traditional Chinese lion dance costume.
The model features a cheerful red-and-yellow lion with expressive facial details, decorative flourishes and an impressive amount of character for a relatively compact build.
Perhaps its most interesting feature is the interchangeable scroll.
Builders can choose between wishes for health or wealth, attaching the scroll to the lion’s mouth or displaying it separately beside the model.
At approximately 14 cm tall, the completed lion should make an attractive decoration for a desk, shelf or festive display.
The set contains a substantial 411 pieces, making it a particularly appealing promotional model rather than a small accessory.
Why the Lion Dance Is So Important
The lion dance is one of the most recognisable traditions associated with Chinese New Year celebrations.
Performed to the rhythmic sounds of drums, cymbals and gongs, the dance is believed to bring good fortune, prosperity and happiness while driving away negative influences.
In Singapore, lion dance performances are particularly common during the Lunar New Year period, appearing at shopping centres, businesses, community celebrations and private homes.
One popular tradition is cai qing (采青), often translated as “plucking the greens”.
During this performance, the lion approaches an arrangement of lettuce, sometimes accompanied by red packets, before symbolically consuming and scattering the greens.
The ritual represents the welcoming of prosperity and good fortune.
LEGO’s Prosperity Lion captures this festive spirit in a playful display model that can be enjoyed long after the celebrations have ended.
A New Direction for LEGO’s Lunar New Year GWPs
The release of LEGO 40976 also marks an interesting change in LEGO’s promotional strategy.
For the past twelve years, LEGO has produced a series of small Chinese zodiac animal sets, culminating in 2026’s LEGO 40779 Year of the Horse.
With the zodiac collection now complete, LEGO appears to be moving towards other traditional Chinese cultural symbols for its Lunar New Year promotional sets.
The Prosperity Lion is a fitting choice, being instantly recognisable and closely associated with the festivities.
One important detail: Although LEGO 40976 has been announced as a gift-with-purchase, the qualifying spending threshold and promotional end date have not yet been confirmed. Collectors should wait for LEGO Singapore’s official promotional announcement before planning their purchases.
A Growing Celebration of Chinese Culture Through LEGO
LEGO’s Chinese Traditional Festival collection has come a long way since its introduction in 2019.
The earliest releases, including 80101 Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner and 80102 Dragon Dance, were initially available only in selected Asian markets.
Their popularity eventually encouraged LEGO to expand the collection internationally, allowing a much wider audience to experience these culturally inspired models.
Over the years, the range has explored reunion dinners, temple fairs, traditional architecture, festive decorations and other aspects of Chinese culture.
What makes the collection particularly appealing is its ability to combine cultural storytelling with the creativity of LEGO building.
For collectors in Singapore, these sets often carry an added sense of familiarity, recreating traditions and decorations that are part of our own Lunar New Year celebrations.
