BUGS Member Spotlight: Gerald Cacas recreates one of the Singapore Army’s most powerful armoured vehicles in an impressive LEGO MOC
For LEGO builder Gerald Cacas, building a tank was a first. His choice was an ambitious one — the Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank, one of the Singapore Army’s most recognizable armoured vehicles.
Created as a MOC for his display at ENBLOCK 2025, Gerald describes the project as a rush build, taking only around 10 to 15 hours to design and build. Despite the limited time, he tried to capture as many details of the real vehicle as possible.
The result is a compact yet highly detailed LEGO interpretation of Singapore’s Leopard 2SG.
The Leopard 2SG
The Leopard 2SG is Singapore’s upgraded version of the German Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tank. The Singapore Army acquired Leopard 2A4s in 2008, with the tanks subsequently upgraded locally to the L2SG standard. They replaced the older SM1 tanks in Singapore’s armoured force.
The real Leopard 2SG is a formidable machine. It weighs almost 50 tonnes, is powered by a 1,500-horsepower engine and can reach speeds of up to 72 km/h. Its main armament is a 120mm smoothbore gun, supported by 7.62mm machine guns and smoke grenade launchers. The tank has a crew of four — commander, driver, gunner and loader.
The Leopard 2’s combination of firepower, mobility and protection makes it a key component of Singapore’s Armour Formation, which describes its mission around the characteristics of firepower, mobility, flexibility, armour protection and shock effect.
Turning a Real Tank into LEGO
For Gerald, the challenge was translating the complex shapes and details of the Leopard 2SG into LEGO elements — and doing it within an extremely tight timeframe.
“It was a rush build, probably only took about 10 to 15 hours to design and build,” he explains.
As this was his first tank model, the project was also something of an experiment. Gerald worked from the appearance of the actual Leopard 2SG and tried to reproduce as many of its distinctive features as he could within the limitations of the build.
One of the model’s movable features is the turret, adding an element of functionality rather than making it purely a static display model.
A Build with More Potential
Although Gerald was pleased with what he managed to achieve in such a short time, he already has ideas for taking the model further.
“If were given more time, I would love to include the interior of the tank,” he says. An interior would certainly provide a fascinating next step, allowing the MOC to explore the crew compartment and the intricate systems hidden beneath the Leopard’s exterior.
The project also has a personal connection to Singapore. Gerald describes Singapore as his “second home”, and the model was created in time to celebrate Singapore’s 61st birthday.
A Singapore Tank, Built in LEGO
What makes Gerald’s MOC particularly interesting is the combination of military engineering, LEGO design and a personal connection to Singapore.
With more time, Gerald’s next version could go even further — adding a detailed interior and bringing even more of Singapore’s Leopard 2SG to life in LEGO.
