2022 Year Of The Tiger Giant Mascot Build – TRU Vivo City

A Roaring Return: BUGS Welcome the Year of the Tiger

The arrival of the Year of the Tiger in 2022 marked more than just the beginning of a new Lunar New Year for BUGS members—it also marked a long-awaited return to one of the group’s favourite traditions.

After two years of COVID-19 restrictions that severely limited gatherings and events, BUGS builders were finally able to return to Toys “R” Us at VivoCity to construct the annual giant zodiac mascot. For many members, the event represented a welcome step towards normalcy and an opportunity to reconnect with friends they had not seen in person for a very long time.

On 1 January 2022, a dedicated team consisting of Richmond Kerk, Chris Lim, Andrew Quek, Ong San San, Neo Chun Guan, Seow Jingru, and Lee Lik Sun gathered to take on the challenge of building a giant tiger mascot to welcome the Lunar New Year.

The tiger, known for symbolizing courage, strength, and determination, was a fitting mascot for a year that many hoped would mark a fresh start after the challenges of the pandemic. Working together, the team carefully assembled the giant model layer by layer, transforming thousands of LEGO elements into an impressive representation of the majestic animal.

While the build itself was enjoyable, what made the event truly special was the opportunity to meet face-to-face once again. After months of restrictions, virtual meetings, and limited social interaction, there was a genuine sense of excitement as members caught up with one another, shared stories, and enjoyed building together once more.

The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with laughter, conversation, and the familiar camaraderie that has always been at the heart of BUGS activities. Old friendships were renewed, and the simple act of gathering around a LEGO build table felt especially meaningful after such a prolonged period apart.

As the giant tiger gradually took shape, it became more than just a festive mascot—it symbolized resilience, optimism, and the return of the community spirit that had been greatly missed over the previous two years.

By the end of the session, the completed tiger stood proudly on display, ready to welcome the Lunar New Year and inspire visitors at VivoCity. More importantly, the event reminded everyone how much they valued the friendships and shared experiences that make BUGS such a special community.

The Year of the Tiger roared into life with a successful build, renewed friendships, and the promise of many more gatherings and building adventures in the months ahead.
