LEGO and Sony have officially joined forces for a nostalgic trip back to the 1990s with the reveal of LEGO PlayStation 72306. And yes—you were right: the set was revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast on September 3, 2026.
Designed for adult builders, the new set recreates the original 1994 PlayStation console in LEGO bricks, complete with its classic controller and several clever gaming Easter eggs.
A Brick-Built Original PlayStation
LEGO 72306 PlayStation contains 1,911 pieces and is an almost 1:1-scale recreation of the original PlayStation. The finished model measures more than 6cm high, 26cm wide and 19cm deep, making it a substantial display piece for gaming rooms and LEGO collections.
The model captures the distinctive grey styling of Sony’s first console, including the disc tray, controller ports and other details from the original hardware.
Adding to the experience, the Power and Open buttons actually function, while the brick-built original PlayStation controller can be plugged into the console.
Two Classic Games Hidden Inside
One of the most interesting aspects of 72306 is that there is more to the console than meets the eye.
Open up the model and you’ll discover two miniature dioramas inspired by classic PlayStation games:
Gran Turismo
The first is a tiny Gran Turismo racing scene, inspired by the original game released in 1997. It features a miniature racing track and tiny cars, providing a fun tribute to one of PlayStation’s most important franchises.
Ape Escape
The second diorama celebrates Ape Escape, the 1999 PlayStation title. The scene features the game’s distinctive monkey helmet, which can be displayed with either a red or blue colour scheme.
Both dioramas can be stored inside the console or removed and displayed separately, giving collectors different options for showing off the set.
The Original Controller Returns
Interestingly, LEGO has chosen to include the original PlayStation controller, rather than the later DualShock controller.
This makes sense from a historical perspective, as the set is specifically recreating the original 1994 console and its first controller. However, it also creates an amusing connection to Ape Escape, which famously made use of the DualShock’s analogue controls.
The controller itself features the iconic Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square button symbols and can physically connect to the console.
A New LEGO Gaming Icon
LEGO has already explored gaming nostalgia with sets such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Atari 2600, PAC-MAN Arcade and Game Boy. The PlayStation is a particularly significant addition because it represents one of the most recognisable gaming consoles of the 1990s.
