2023 Year Of The Rabbit Giant Mascot Build – TRU Vivo City/JEM

Double the Rabbits, Double the Prosperity!

The annual BUGS giant zodiac mascot build returned once again, and for the Year of the Rabbit, members decided that one rabbit simply wasn’t enough. Since the rabbit is traditionally associated with abundance, prosperity, and good fortune, BUGS builders took on the unique challenge of building not one, but two giant rabbits to welcome the Lunar New Year.

The first rabbit was constructed on 30 December 2022 at Toys “R” Us, VivoCity, where a team of dedicated builders gathered to kick off the celebrations. Thanks to the spacious venue and favourable working conditions, the build progressed smoothly, with the giant rabbit taking shape layer by layer over the course of the session.

The second rabbit was built a few weeks later on 15 January 2023 at JEM, just in time to welcome the Lunar New Year. While the builders expected another straightforward build, events took an unexpected turn when mall security switched off the mall lighting before the build was completed.

With much of the surrounding area plunged into darkness, the team had to improvise. The builders relied on the small spotlights from the nearby Famous Amos store as their primary light source, carefully continuing their work under less-than-ideal conditions. Despite the challenging circumstances, nobody was willing to give up. Piece by piece, the rabbit continued to grow as the team worked together to complete the mascot.

Fortunately, the setback did little to dampen the spirits of the builders. What could have been a frustrating situation instead became one of the most memorable moments of the event. There was plenty of laughter, teamwork, and determination as everyone rallied together to finish the build.

The successful completion of both giant rabbits was made possible by the efforts of Chris Lim, Andrew Quek, Ong San San, Khor Chin Seong, Lee Lik Sun, Ko Lingwei, Seow Jingru, Neo Chun Guan, and Eugene Tan, whose dedication and teamwork ensured that the annual tradition continued in spectacular fashion.

By the end of the project, BUGS had not only completed two impressive giant rabbit mascots but had also created another memorable chapter in the group’s long-running New Year tradition. The Year of the Rabbit was welcomed in with abundance, friendship, and plenty of LEGO bricks—a fitting start to what everyone hoped would be a prosperous and joyful year ahead.
